A fun middleweight mash up took place at tonight's (Wed., Jan. 15, 2014) UFC Fight Night 35: "Rockhold vs. Philippou" event from the Arena at Gwinnet Center in Duluth, Georgia, on Fox Sports 1, as hard hitters Yoel Romero and Derek Brunson met inside the Octagon to exchange pleasantries.
And by "pleasantries" I mean "fists".
They let 'em fly early, with Romero aggressively attacking with his heavy overhand punches mixed with flying knees. Then, Brunson landed a huge head kick that created a sickening thud but failed to have its desired result, namely a knockout.
It didn't even get a knockdown, actually.
Shit got real after that, with both fighters winging blows. There were close calls, as most seemed to be because these two are thick and throwing with the worst of intentions. Every uppercut looked like it could take a head off and send it flying into the stands.
Brunson found success with a takedown, surprisingly enough. In a bout like this, points were at a premium, as proven by the third round that saw Romero start landing huge shots.
Then a big one. Then another big one. Then Brunson was covering up and wanting out but the referee refused to give it to him until Romero had him sideways and just laying there while he took kidney shot after kidney shot.
More than 10 before the referee stepped in. Just an awful stoppage.
