UFC FIGHT NIGHT 29 PLAY-BY-PLAY MAIN CARD COMMENTARY (FOX SPORTS 1):
C.J. Tuttle here with the play-by-play:
Underway at 5:09 EST.
170 lbs.: Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields
Maia enters the arena to Linkin Park -- eff yea!
Round 1: Maia came out right off the bat and shot in on Shields, he looks to be testing Shield's cage defense. He is eventually successful and scores the first take down of the bout. Maia riding Shields and now landing some nice right hands, he hasn't been able to pass guard yet, but he is continuing to pressure.
Shields has a body lock of his own now and is pressing Maia against the cage. Maia has under hooks and scores another take down. There is 2:30 left, Shields stands but gives up his back. He hoola-hoops out of the conundrum and is now in a dominant position with 2:00 minutes remaining.
Shields remains on top with one minute in the frame. I don't know if I can take five rounds of this shit. Shields is grappling Maia's midriff on the ground, obviously content in the dominant position. Shields took care of things the final two minutes but I side with Maia.
(10-9) Maia
Round 2: Both shoot in unison to begin the second. Maia has the left leg of Shields, but hasn't completed the take down. Shields looks to be bleeding from the nose. Shields scores a take down and goes back to work in the top position. He is working short elbows to Maia's head, fighting the type of fight that greatly benefits him. Maia is trying to wall walk, but Shields is holding on for dear life.
The crowd is silent.
Shields is utilizing the blanket technique perfectly with two minutes remaining. The American is using the cage as a partner to nullify the attempts from Maia to stand. Shields is looking around the audience, he continues to bleed from the nose, perfectly comfortable riding Maia till the cows come home.
Maia is going for a triangle casually, but that was five minutes of shit.
(10-9) Shields
Round 3: Maia throws two big hooks to start the third. They both miss. Maia landed a left hand, this caused an impulse take down attempt from Shields, he failed. Maia flipped the script and pushed Shields against the cage, he almost had the take down, but Shields countered.
They separated and Maia landed some big punches to Shield's chin, he then followed up with a take down. He had Jake's back but Shields masterfully reversed and ended up on top. Two minutes left. Shields has side control, now in the guard. Literally laying his head in the center of Maia's chest. One minute left, the boo's are prevalent again.
Other than those punches from Maia this was again a boring round with both lying together comfortably.
(10-9) Shields
Round 4: This fight is terrible. Just the complete opposite of what UFC wants in a main event. Both remain in the clinch up against the cage. Shields is using all his leverage to keep Maia against the steel mesh. The ref stepped in and finally broke up the stand still.
Maia throwing the left hand more often, Shields shoots the single, and Maia is able to sprawl free. After a little tumbling, Maia now on top, but has nothing left to do any sort of damage. He is staying busy, hitting little punches to the liver of Shields. The ref stepped in and stood them up, a little premature in my opinion as Shields has been doing that all fight.
The two are staring at each other in the center of the Octagon. This one was terrible, but I guess I give it to Maia.
(10-9) Maia
Round 5: This round will decide the fight. Both are gassed, but at least Shields isn't shooting yet. It's almost as if Shields doesn't know how to throw any punches. He shoots, but Maia sprawls.
Shields has a leg and is trying desperately to complete the take down, meanwhile Maia holds on for dear life. The ref says "to work" and they move but don't separate. Both men doing everything in their power to stay upright. Shields is tapping the legs of Maia with baby leg kicks, she shoots again but fails.
Maia struggling to throw punches, he does land a big one though, one minute and thirty seconds left, Shields sloppily shoots and fails, he almost had it.
Shields is holding onto the leg with one minute left, the ref splits them up for the final thirty seconds, Maia lands a left hand but that is it.
(10-9) Shields
(48-47) Jake Shields on my card --
Final result: Jake Shields wins via split decision (48-47 X 2) (47-48)
-end-
170 lbs.: Dong Hyun Kim vs. Erick Silva
Round 1: Both dudes look big for welterweight, Erick Silva with a spinning elbow to start. Kim coming inside but SIlva dispelling of the attempt. Kim being aggressive, Silva takes the back of Kim but the two separate and trade shots.
Kim is now in control against the cage with 3:30 left in the round. Kim with the mount following a take down. Kim on top of Silva, the boo's are raining down as Silva worked a half-guard sweep trying to fight the wrestling of Kim. Hyun doing a good job of riding SIlva.
(10-9) Kim
Round 2: ABSOLUTELY CRAZY EXCHANGE FROM THE TWO TO BEGIN THE SECOND. SILVA THROWING HUGE LEFT AND RIGHT HOOKS, THEN FOLLOWING WITH A FLYING KNEE. KIM GOT ROCKED AND SILVA TRIED TO FINISH BUT KIM IS STILL ALIVE.
Sorry about the all caps, but holy shit that was crazy.
Both men suddenly look exhausted, Hyun Kim is taking a ton of punishment, Silva gets a body lock and goes for the take down. Silva throws HUGE punches.
OMG THE STUN GUN JUST KNOCKED SILVA OUT COLD. He landed a huge hammer fist to add an exclamation point to the finish.
OMG SILVA IS STILL OUT, crazy crazy back and forth fight and the absolute KO of the evening. Silva took one right on the button.
Final result: Dong Hyun Kim wins via knockout at (3:01) of round two
-end-
205 lbs.: Matt Hamill vs. Thiago Silva
Round 1: I fear for Matt Hamill --
Pointing out the obvious here but Silva looks fat. Slow start to the first round. First good combination from Silva rocks Hamill. Silva is moving forward as the crowd chants his name, nice body shot from Silva, followed by a nice one from Hamill.
Hamill is trading much too often with Silva early. Curious to see if this fight ends up with Silva absolutely gassed, his corner is already yelling for him to keep his hands up. Hamill landed a big liver shot, showed Silva grimace. Good opening three minutes from Silva, followed up by a solid two from Hamill. Closer round then some may think.
(10-9) Silva
Round 2: Matt Hamill tore down Silva with a huge outside leg kick, Hamill came inside to take advantage and Silva threw punches to get out of the conundrum. Hamill scored a take down, but Silva was back up with ease. Hamill going to the body successfully, right to that bloated Silva midriff.
Silva now working over Hamill's lead leg, Matt is limping. Silva is visibly gassed -- expect anything here. Don't get it twisted, Hamill is slowing down also. SILVA ROCKED HAMILL. He didn't finish it quick enough, and allowed Hamill to recover. Good non-stoppage by the referee.
One minute left -- Silva is tagging Hamill, who is wobbly. Hamill needs to hang on and he does, he ends up finishing the round on top.
(10-9) Silva
Round 3: Hamill went for the take down but it was sprawled. SIlva takes the back of Hamill and is throwing punches from the top position. Now back to the feet with four minutes remaining. Hamill seems to be the more gassed of the two parties at this point. Silva is utilizing the leg kick and keeping the distance, knowing he has a decision in his pocket. Silva got poked in the left eye, and is currently recuperating. The doctor is taking a look, Silva wants nothing to do with that and says he is okay.
Silva looks refreshed, throwing punches and staying with the leg kick, crowd chanting "Ole" with each connection. Hamill looked up at the clock with two minutes left, he keeps shooting but is nowhere near a take down. Silva doesn't have enough in the tank to finish the fight. Yet, he did enough to get the W.
Awkward sequence at the end with Silva showing mercy and allowing Hamill to survive. Hamill could not get his hands up and was literally a zombie. The ref didn't step in and stop the bout. Scary.
(10-8) Silva
(30-26) Thiago Silva on my card --
Final result: Thiago Silva wins via unanimous decision (30-27 X 2) (29-27)
-end-
205 lbs.: Joey Beltran vs. Fabio Maldonado
Round 1: Hopefully these two come out swinging for the fences. Both start out slow. Now Beltran has Maldonado up against the cage, Maldonado got caught with an accidental low blow. We are in the midst of a five minute pause.
Joey clipped Maldonado as he worked his way inside for a take down. Three minutes in the first and majority of the offense has been via dirty boxing. One minute left in the round, both fighting for position against the cage, they split for a second and Maldonaldo landed a big right hand. Both of these guys have strong chins. Beltran with the take down, both to their feet as the round closes, not much occurred, I side with Beltran
(10-9) Beltran
Round 2: Beltran looking to establish the jab to start the second. Maldonado countering nicely with the jab and circling back towards the center of the Octagon. Maldonado switching between body and head shots well, but Beltran was successful in putting Maldonado back against the cage.
Maldonado nodding as Beltran pushes him against the cage, he knows Beltran wants to put him against the cage. A little flurry from Beltran that results in his mouth piece coming from his mouth. Both men obviously tiring.
Maldonado has closed down the angle and is tagging Beltran, who is trying to hang on. The body shots are taking their toll. The left jab is destroying Beltran, his only defense is turning away from the punch.
(10-9) Maldonado
Round 3: Maldonado seems to be fresher as the third frame opens. He is peppering with that jab. Beltran is trying to box with him but it isn't working out. Beltran is just pushing him against the cage in what is so hard to watch it's excruciating.
Maldonado is begging for the two to exchange but Beltran is comfortable with things the way they are. Maldonado trying to fight the clinch. Beltran is selling a low blow. One minute to go, Maldonado throwing now, both men showing off their formidable chin. Beltran has scored a late take down that will be the difference in this round and ultimately the fight.
(10-9) Beltran
(29-28) Joey Beltran on my card --
Final result: Fabio Maldonado wins via split decision (29-28 X 2) (28-29)
-end-
170 lbs.: Mike Pierce vs. Rousimar Palhares
Round 1: Mike Pierce immediately got the take down but got caught in Palhares's web and was submitted via heel hook. What a surpise.
Final result: Rousimar Palhares wins via submission at (0:31) of first round
-end-
135 lbs.: T.J. Dillashaw vs. Raphael Assuncao
Round 1: Assuncao throws a leg kick and Dillashaw throws some huge punches. Dillashaw comes in with a huge uppercut but misses. Both men look aggressive, each are crisp, and have the knock out power. Dillashaw scores the first take down of the fight, but Assuncao is right back up.
Dillashaw is mixing it up beautifully, Assuncao is looking to load up but is being out done with Dillashaw's speed. Dillashaw now is hanging onto Assuncao's back and looking to crank the Brazilian out. Dillashaw now has it in deep and is looking to finish this fight. Assuncao is weathering the storm, Dillashaw has flattened him out but allowed Assuncao to stand.
The crowd is nuts.
Dillashaw threw a huge leg kick and slipped, the round still went to Dillashaw
(10-9) Dillashaw
Round 2: Assuncao switched up his stance and has landed some strikes to open the second. Dillashaw went for a kick but it got caught and almost resulted in a take down. Dillashaw is trying to get his range again. Dillashaw looks poised, ready to throw a big kick, but Assuncao countered.
He is going for a guillotine choke, but Dillashaw is okay. They are resting against the cage now are back to their feet with two minutes left. Both men are still trading, really great fight so far. Dillashaw trying hard for the take down, now has one hook in and has his back. Dillashaw is bleeding heavily out of the nose.
Dillashaw closed the gap towards the end up this one is Assuncao's
(10-9) Assuncao
Round 3: Third and final is under way. Dillashaw is going for the head kick and Assuncao continues to catch the attempts. Four minutes to go in the third. Both men are cautious, looking to counter. Another head shot attempt from T.J. Assuncao went for a single but it was sprawled. Dillashaw continues to switch stances, he also continues to bleed from nose and a cut above right eye.
A take down for either man could win this fight. Dillashaw is pressing forward, but on the flip side shows the damage. Duane Ludwig is screaming for T.J. to score a take down with one minute left. Thirty seconds left, this round could go either way, I lean towards Dillashaw by a hair.
(10-9) Dillashaw
(29-28) Dillashaw on my card --
Final result: Raphael Assuncao wins via split decision (29-28) (28-29) (29-28)
-end-
170 lbs.: Igor Araujo vs. Ildemar Alcantara
Round 1: Araujo landed a leg kick to the head and immediately shot in for a take down. He was unsuccessful. It is clear Araujo wants to take the fight to the ground. Alcantara has done a good job weathering the grappling storm. Alcantara landed a nice knee to the midsection and now is pinning Araujo against the cage, now Alcantara takes Araujo down.
Araujo swept Alcantara and went for a guillotine, they roll over and Alcantara ends up back on top, trying to pass the guard. Araujo was in a modified guillotine but did a good job to escape, he ended up in top position with one minute left in the round. Araujo is looking for hammer fists and is posturing up trying to create damage. He landed an elbow or two but Alcantara weathered the storm.
(10-9) Araujo
Round 2: Alcantara looks tired in his corner, no advice is being given, they are icing his whole body.
Araujo landed a clean right hand that rocked Alcantara to start off the second frame. Araujo has a mouse under his right eye, he got taken down quickly by Alcantara. Araujo is very comfortable on his back, Alcantara wisely wants this fight to take place on the feet. The ref stepped in and stood them up with 2:30 left in the second. Alcantara got a take down but lost his balance and Araujo ended up in the top position, this is the same scenario as the first round, Alcantara started strong but is being beaten in the second half of the round.
Araujo is still on top of Alcantara, doing just enough to not be stood up. Now he postures up in the final 20 seconds and lands some big punches. I lean towards the more active Araujo.
(10-9) Araujo
Round 3: Both men look tired, this round will determine the fight on most people's cards. Araujo threw a hay maker and missed. Araujo is being persistent with the take down attempts, he just was successful with a trip and is now on top position with three minutes left to go. Alcantara went for a half-assed heel hook, Araujo easily escaped, he remains on top with two minutes to go.
Araujo is STILL ON TOP. There is one minute left and if it ends like this Araujo will take this fight. Araujo stayed on top the entire round, and will win this fight.
(10-9) Araujo
(30-27) Araujo on my card --
Final result: Igor Araujo wins via unanimous decision (29-28 X 3)
-end-
170 lbs.: Yan Cabral vs. David Mitchell
Round 1: Cabral is going hard for the rear naked choke, he scored the take down right off the top and Mitchell does not look comfortable on the bottom. Cabral is looking to get the stoppage with the strikes, he has transitioned to the back in total control, going for the choke.
Cabral postured up and landed some big punches, Mitchell is lazily going for a triangle, just biding time. Cabral engaged and entered a side position. With 1:45 left in first they both rose to their feet, Mitchell scored a take down for a second, but Cabral popped right back upright. Mitchell is tough, taking a lot of punishment, he seems to be waiting out the round.
(10-9) Cabral
Round 2: Cabral dropped Mitchell with a punch right off the bat, he is now pounding on Mitchell's head with the short strikes. The pace has slowed, with Cabral comfortable holding onto Mitchell in the dominant position. Good grappling being exchanged on the ground, Mitchell is going for every sort of submission possible. Cabral is still holding onto Mitchell as the round comes to a close.
(10-9) Cabral
Round 3: Mitchell's corner begging for him to not let Cabral get a hold of him. Mitchell pressuring a little bit to start of the third frame. Cabral doing the countering, he allowed Mitchell to throw a punch then got the take down. Cabral has Mitchell's back, he went for a choke, but Mitchell escaped. There are two minutes to go in the third, pending a hail mary from Mitchell, this one is finished.
Mitchell went for a triangle and almost had it locked in but Cabral escaped.
(10-9) Cabral
(30-27) Cabral on my card --
Final result: Yan Cabral wins via unanimous decision (30-27 X 3)
-end-
125 lbs.: Chris Cariaso vs. Iliarde Santos
Round 1: Keith Peterson draws the reffing assignment. Santos and Cariaso both trading kicks to start, Cariaso utilizing the left leg kick often. Santos is countering with the right leg kick. Not much action to begin with three minutes left in the fight, Santos scores a take down and is landing some stiff right hands from the top position.
Cariaso is trying to cage walk and stand up, Santos went for a knee bar and Cariaso ended up on top. Santos is being aggressive and pushing his opponent up against the cage. Santos went for a spinning back elbow but missed. The pace is slowing a little bit, Santos landed some big uppercuts and Cariaso looked to be hurt. Cariaso is still countering, but has definitely taken a beating this round. Santos gets another take down to secure the round in his favor.
(10-9) Santos
Round 2: Nice start to round two from Cariaso, he is doing the better striking. He is sticking and moving the punches, then getting out before Santos can counter. Cariaso telegraphs the left kick badly, the two are really trading with 3:30 in the second, Santos got dropped by Cariaso and now Cariaso is in full mount raining down elbows. He did a ton of damage there.
They both are standing with 2:00 left, Santos looks really hurt, Cariaso is dominating this round. Santos is bleeding from the nose and his mouth is agape, Cariaso is hitting the body now with that leg kick I mentioned earlier. Santos is exhausted, just taking punches. He Is eating shots to the body and face -- the ref stops it!
Final result: Chris Cariaso wins via technical knockout at (4:31) of second round
-end-
155 lbs.: Allan Patrick vs. Garett Whiteley
Round 1: Patrick with the first take down. They both are back on their feet with four minutes left to go in the round. Now both gauging their striking distance, crowd already chanting "you're gonna die" towards Whiteley in Portuguese. Accidental low blow from Patrick, Whiteley recovered and we are back under way with three minutes left in round.
Telegraphed spinning back kick from Patrick when they re-engage, Whiteley landed a big uppercut and both are exchanging now in center of Octagon. Pro Brazilian crowd eating up every Patrick movement. Both men landing significant strikes, big shot from Patrick drops Whiteley with a right hand and we have an early TKO finish from the Brazilian, the fight is over.
Final result: Alan Patrick wins via technical knockout at (3:54) of first round
