UFC Quick Quote: Jon Jones reacts to 'sloppy' fight, praises 'tough' Alexander Gustafsson

USA TODAY Sports

The seemingly unstoppable Jon Jones got the fight -- and scared -- of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career tonight (Sat., Sept. 21, 2013) at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, courtesy of Alexander Gustafsson.

"Man, I'll tell you what, I've been asking for a dog fight for a long time, and I finally got that dog fight I've been looking for. Tonight was a blessing in so many ways -- got the victory, and I got to prove a lot to myself. I'm not satisfied, I've got a lot more work to do in the gym to stay on top of my game. He was just a tough fighter. I spent a lot of time on my boxing this camp and maybe that wasn't the best idea. I should have been like water and used more versatility. I'll tell you what, hats off to Alexander, that was by far my toughest fight, and I really had to exercise my warrior spirit tonight, which makes me more happier than getting the win. I felt really sloppy tonight. Alexander is very game -- that guy definitely has a chin on him."

-- Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was searching for answers in his post-fight speech shortly after Alexander Gustafsson took him to the brink in their epic UFC 165 main event last night (Sat., Sept. 21, 2013) from Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. "The Mauler" turned in the fight of his life, which undoubtedly produced perhaps the greatest 205-pound world title fight in the history of mixed martial arts (MMA). It was, indeed, a back-and-forth dog fight, with Jones cut open, busted up and swollen shut after five rounds of insanely close action. Gustafsson was worse for the wear, too, his golden mane stained crimson after 25 minutes of all out war. When it came to read the final decision, the tension was unreal, a true toss up despite a wonky -- and unfortunate -- score card (49-46) that was wildly out of step with what actually transpired inside the Octagon. Amazing fight. Rematch, anyone? For more on the history-making fight between Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson click here, here and here.
