Jones vs. Gustafsson, Round 5

Alexander Gustafsson's height and reach was supposed to bring him greatness. Jon Jones's freakishly athletic ability and natural talent was supposed to make him the greatest champion the sport has ever seen. The two met tonight (Sat., Sept. 21, 2013) at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in the main event of UFC 165 with the light heavyweight title -- and for "Bones" a couple records -- on the line.

After the events of the fourth, this was about as intriguing a fight as could be heading into this final frame. Gustafsson wasn't shy about engaging in the center, throwing punches and staying in the pocket. Jones was just as eager, firing back with his usual.

Both men were cut and bleeding.

"The Mauler" missed a takedown but backed out with a few punches, dirty boxing style. He also landed a hard left hook not long after. Jones responded with another big elbow. The Swede wanted a takedown but couldn't get there.

Then, on his 10th takedown attempt of the night, Jones finally put Gustafsson on his back. He got back to his feet after scooting to the fence, though, and they reset with half the round left.

Incredible.

Both guys were clearly exhausted at this point, with Gustafsson visibly moving labored and trying not to betray how tired he seemed to be. Gustafsson missed a big spinning elbow himself. Jones fired off with head kicks, and the Swede ate them.

Unreal.

Another head kick with 30 seconds left was checked. Both guys were so gassed, it's amazing they were surviving any hard shot to the head.

Finally, mercifully, the horn sounded on one of the best fights you'll ever see.

Jon Jones defeats Alexander Gustafsson via unanimous decision (48-47 x2, 49-46) ... barely.

Jones vs. Gustafsson, Round 4

Gustafsson came out winging those overhand punches to open up the first championship round. Jones weathered the storm, firing off with his distance offense.

He came in with a big right hand and landed clean not long after. Naturally, "The Mauler" answered back with a big shot of his own.

Really, we were getting a lot of pawing punches and kicks that were landing but no one was doing heavy damage, or at least it didn't appear that way. Both guys were having success but the commentators told us the Swede was ahead statistically, at least as far as total punches landed.

Oh, and he was stuffing takedowns in a big way.

This is without mentioning a cut over Jones's eye that was leaking right down into his line of sight. This was becoming a big round for Gustafsson, as he was having a lot of success landing and staying away from taking too much damage.

Then, Gustafsson got in trouble with a big elbow. He tried to run away and avoid taking a big enough shot to stop it but he was hurt bad. Somehow he survived to the end of the round, but he was hurt badly and cut just like Jones.

Jones vs. Gustafsson, Round 3

"The Mauler" opened with a big combination, landing some clean punches and continuing the success he found in the first couple rounds. Jones, meanwhile, continued throwing those push kicks, both to the head and the knees.

Add in some spinning back kicks, as well.

Jones landed a head kick that probably should have been more effective than it was. In fact, Gustafsson just ate it and kept on coming. This didn't look like we were watching a phenom stalking his prey like in past Jones fights; this looked like an evenly matched challenger giving the champion a good run for his money.

Jones started scoring some offense of his own late and it was then that "The Mauler" appeared to be breathing a little heavy. Fatigue setting in?

Nonetheless, he stayed heavy in tight. His next takedown attempt came up lame, stuffed easily. Jones missed a spinning elbow and Gustafsson couldn't finish a takedown to close out the frame.

Jones vs. Gustafsson, Round 2

The second opened with pure excitement, as Gustafsson caught a leg kick and snap kicked Jones leg out from under him. The crowd popped huge for it, and "Bones" responded by getting up and running the Swede down to try to get a takedown.

But he couldn't get there.

They went back to exchanging offense with neither getting the clear edge. The offense that Jones has found so much success with in the past wasn't working this time around, though a front kick did hit to the face about halfway home.

Heavy counter shots were just missing.

Gustafsson caught another leg kick but this time couldn't knock Jones down with it. The champion tried to roll through but missed on a submission attempt and couldn't shoot a single or a double leg takedown on the way back up.

That's not something that's ever happened to him before.

The round came to an end and Jones raised his hands to the crowd, perhaps signaling he was okay. It sure didn't look that way, though.

Jones vs. Gustafsson, Round 1

Jones opened the first round with that trademark knee chop kick that so many fighters despise for how dangerous it is for their limbs. "The Mauler" didn't seem to mind, as he fired back immediately.

"Bones" had a game plan, though, and that seemed to be to maintain distance with push kicks and outside punches. Although Gustafsson is as tall as the champion, he is at a reach disadvantage.

No matter, he found some success with a right hand down the pipe that excited color commentator Joe Rogan. He was finding some openings, enough so that Jones started backing out instead of exchanging.

Then, the exotic offense.

That means spinning back kicks and what not.Gustafsson weathered that storm and continued coming over the top and picking his spots. He even broke out a few interesting strikes, like a spinning kick of his own.

With roughly one minute left in the round, the Swede earned a takedown. He didn't do anything with it, but he definitely scored some points. Jones tried to even the score with a takedown of his own before the round was out, but he didn't get there.
