Matt Grice injury update: UFC featherweight taken off medication, responding to verbal cues following car crash

USA TODAY Sports

Injured UFC featherweight Matt Grice continues to show signs of improvement following his near-fatal car crash earlier this month in Oklahoma.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight and Oklahoma City police officer Matt Grice has been taken off medication following his horrific car accident earlier this month in Pottawatomie County, responding to verbal cues and giving a "thumbs up" to his family and friends.

UFC Tonight provided an update on his injuries on Wednesday night.

Grice was in a medically-induced coma after getting rear-ended at a stoplight, which in turn caused his Jeep to collide with other vehicles stopped at the intersection. While no one else at the scene was seriously injured, the former collegiate wrestling champion was not wearing his seatbelt and as a result, found himself hospitalized in critical condition.

And while things are looking up following his recent brain surgery, he's not out of the woods just yet.

"The Real One" was in line to fight Jeremy Larsen at the upcoming UFC 166: "Velasquez vs. Dos Santos 3" pay-per-view (PPV) event on Oct. 19, 2013, in Houston, Texas, but that mixed martial arts (MMA) match was re-booked to feature Larsen vs. Charles Oliveira.
