The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) makes its debut on Fox Sports 1 (formerly Speed) on August 17, 2013 at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The card, UFC Fight Night 26, is headlined with a light heavyweight bout between Chael Sonnen and Mauricio Rua. In the co-main event, Alistair Overeem faces Travis Browne in heavyweight action.
This marks the UFC's return to Boston, with their last event being UFC 118 way back in 2010, which featured Frankie Edgar defending his lightweight belt against BJ Penn by unanimous decision.
There was a bit of controversy surrounding this upcoming event, as the Las Vegas Culinary Union and other groups sought to prevent Chael Sonnen from being granted a fighter license by the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission. The UFC has been in an ongoing battle over the past few years with the Culinary Union, as the Fertittas brothers' Station Casinos don't hire union workers.
Sonnen was ultimately granted a license, despite the interference by social groups, and the main event is no longer in jeopardy.
The main card airs at 6:00 pm ET on Fox Sports 1.
