Aldo finishes Sung Jung with punches

The main event of the UFC 163: "Aldo vs. Korean Zombie" pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sat., Aug. 3, 2013) at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, featured one of the pound-for-pound greatest fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today,Jose Aldo, defending his featherweight championship in the main event against Chan Sung Jung, a man few believed going in would have what it takes to dethrone the 145-pound king.

Into the championship rounds and Aldo still looked relatively relaxed. In fact, his corner was telling him to turn up the intensity to close out the fight.

He did just that after the opening minute of inactivity, firing off head kicks that were connecting clean. Before long, he came rushing in with an onslaught that ultimately resulted in Sung Jung apparently injuring his shoulder and eventually getting finished in the corner of the cage.

And STILL featherweight champion.

Aldo still in control of Sung Jung after three

The main event of the UFC 163: "Aldo vs. Korean Zombie" pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sat., Aug. 3, 2013) at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, featured one of the pound-for-pound greatest fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today,Jose Aldo, defending his featherweight championship in the main event against Chan Sung Jung, a man few believed going in would have what it takes to dethrone the 145-pound king.

In between rounds, "The Korean Zombie's" coaches were telling him he was doing well. While that may be the case relative to past performances against Aldo, he certainly wasn't winning the fight this way.

He did reclaim the aggression he started with, though, driving in with reckless abandon and executing a flying knee that, if it had connected, very likely would have done serious damage.

The problem is that it missed and Aldo ended up turning him around in the ensuing scramble. Once again, "Scarface" was on top in dominant position.

The next couple minutes were measured, so much so that Herb Dean, the referee, finally had enough and decided to stand them up. It's not like it had much of a difference, though. Aldo was clinching up against the fence shortly after another exchange and Sung Jung was defending against a double leg for what felt like forever.

Again, Dean separated the two and reset them in the center of the cage.

"The Zombie" came forward all crazy to close the round, with a flying knee and relentless attack that had Aldo on the defensive.

Aldo maintains control of Zombie through two

The main event of the UFC 163: "Aldo vs. Korean Zombie" pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sat., Aug. 3, 2013) at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, featured one of the pound-for-pound greatest fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today,Jose Aldo, defending his featherweight championship in the main event against Chan Sung Jung, a man few believed going in would have what it takes to dethrone the 145-pound king.

Round two saw Jung open with far more pressure than he was utilizing in the first. It meant offering more offense but also leaving himself open defensively, a position one does not want to find oneself in when engaging in hand-to-hand combat with Jose freaking Aldo.

Sure enough, a rush forward resulted in a stiff counter overhand shot that put a quick end to the "Zombie's" reckless aggression.

Aldo also started popping a jab out there. Both fighters were restrained, though, as Brian Stann noted on commentary, it started to look like Sung Jung was second guessing himself.

Everyone has a game plan until they get punched in the face, like the great Mike Tyson once said.

Or grabbed up and thrown to the mat, like "Scarface" did to his challenger next. The champion executed a beautifully brutal takedown with roughly one minute remaining in the round. If nothing else, it established his control of the bout, even if he was fending off a submission attempt or two.

Right, Phil Davis?

Aldo takes control of the Zombie in round one

The main event of the UFC 163: "Aldo vs. Korean Zombie" pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sat., Aug. 3, 2013) at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, featured one of the pound-for-pound greatest fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today, Jose Aldo, defending his featherweight championship in the main event against Chan Sung Jung, a man few believed going in would have what it takes to dethrone the 145-pound king.

If there was any thought that the "Korean Zombie" would be intimidated even in the slightest, that went away when he came pushing forward with punches early on. He was the aggressor, in fact, for much of the first half of the opening frame.

Then Aldo showed just why he's so damn good and exploded with a quick combination that got everyone's attention.

Still, Sung Jung pushed ahead, not backing away from exchanging punches one bit. Sure, he was more calculated but Aldo was matching that with patience, choosing to pick his spots and strike quickly as opposed to an overwhelming blitz of violence.

The threat was always there, however.

Eventually, the "Zombie" was faking takedowns and looking to come over the top. In response to this, the Brazilian earned a takedown of his own with a stunning speed in a scramble. The round ended with Sung Jung fending off a spinning wheel kick and flying knee.

Exclamation point.
