UFC Fight Night 27 'Condit vs Kampmann 2' results: So ... about last night ...

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Condit picked up an impressive technical knockout victory over Martin Kampmann in the main event of UFC Fight Night 27 from Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., last night (Aug. 28, 2013). With the win, Condit's name is back in the discussion for the welterweight Top 5.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) made its return to FOX Sports 1 (FS1) last night (Aug. 28, 2013) at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. UFC Fight Night 27 was headlined by a rematch between Welterweight talents Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann.

Overall, it was a pretty good night of mixed martial arts (MMA) fights.

Yeah, there were some stinkers (I'm looking at you Brad Tavares and Bubba McDaniel), but overall, it was another solid outing by the UFC. It was also nice to hear that from now on UFC will air all of its televised "Prelims" on FS1. I guess combat sports fans just can't find FOX Sports 2 (formerly FUEL TV) on their televisions.

Anyway, about last night ....

'Natural Born Killer' indeed.

I'll admit, I was concerned when the main event started. Condit didn't exactly put on an amazing display of takedown defense in the first round. In fact, he made it seem like Kampmann possessed high level wrestling. But, apparently he was just playing possum, lulling Kampmann into a false sense of security. Condit has always had a killer instinct in the cage and the third and fourth rounds were gruesome (watch highlights here). I'd love to see him fight Johny Hendricks or Georges St. Pierre again even though he probably has more work to do before securing those rematches.

What happened to Donald Cerrone?

Seriously, can someone tell me what happened to "Cowboy?" He's always been a super slow starter, but he just never turned it on. Never once did I think, Rafael dos Anjos "was in trouble." I don't know what's going on with him, but Cerrone is just one of the most inconsistent fighters in MMA.

Kelvin Gastelum is a beast!

I didn't expect Gastelum to run through Brian Melancon the way that he did. That was one of the quickest finishes I can remember, especially that transition to the back and choke. Just beastly. Moving to train at Reign definitely has helped improve his all around MMA game. Now, let's see if he can next level it.

Prospects sometimes don't pan out ...

Erik Perez and Robert Whittaker are considered two of the top young prospects in the UFC. Both of them lost split decisions. Perez took a huge step up in competition against Takeya Mizugaki and outworked everywhere. Whittaker's fight with Court McGee was a dirty boxing affair, the kind of fight that latter loves. Hopefully, they'll learn from these fights, but it may be time to cool it on the hype for a bit.

Other Thoughts

  • Super stoked in Jason High's win last night. He's one of the nicest guys in the sport and that guillotine choke was insanely tight. Glad he picked up the W.
  • Bubba McDaniel didn't have any sort of desire to win that fight. He had to have known he was down two rounds entering the third and yet he didn't look for a finish. That's not going to cut it in the Octagon.
  • I thought the knees that Abel Trujillo threw were legal. We've seen it happen a lot in MMA where a fighter will look for a way out. I'm not doubting they did damage, just that they didn't land to the face of Roger Bowling to warrant a "No Contest."
  • It may be time to cut ties with Papy Abedi. He's 1-3 in the UFC and just not all that good.
Well, that's all I got for this card. Be sure to check out the rest of MMAmania.com's full coverage of UFC Fight Night 27 right here.
