According to reports emanating in Singapore today, Shinya Aoki could be set to make his featherweight debut as early as October 18, 2013 with Evolve MMA pushing for him to get a spot on the card at ONE FC: "Total Domination," which is headlined by the bantamweight unification bout between Bibiano Fernandes vs. Soo Chul Kim.
The co-main event at the Singapore Indoor Stadium is already set and will see Peter Davis take on Eddie Ng in a lightweight match-up, but Evolve MMA CEO Chatri Sityodtong confirmed to Fox Sports Asia he is also hoping Aoki will be offered a featherweight fight on the card.
"Shinya wants to drop to featherweight and I want to see that too, because I think he is going to be amazing there, look how big he already is and the size advantage he will have. We are still pushing Victor (Cui) to put Shinya on the card for October 18. You can never know what can happen."
If Aoki were to drop down to 145 pounds it would clear the way for his teammate Ng to fight for the title at lightweight and would also open up the possibility of a "super fight" against Fernandes who is the former DREAM featherweight champion and won the DREAM featherweight Grand Prix back in 2009.
However, it appears ONE FC officials are reluctant to allow Aoki to vacate the lightweight belt he won by submitting Kotetsu Boku earlier this year with Chatri also mentioning that: "I think [One FC CEO] Victor Cui wants Shinya to defend his title at lightweight."
Time will tell.
