UFC Fight Night 26: "Shogun vs. Sonnen" from TD Bank Garden in Boston, Mass., is officially in the books after a solid evening (Sat., Aug. 17, 2013) of mixed martial arts (MMA) action for the first time ever on FOX Sports 1.
The main event of the evening, Mauricio Rua vs. Chael Sonnen, was a five-round, non-title Light Heavyweight showdown between a former 205-pound champion and a three-time championship runner-up. It was billed as a striker versus wrestler match up, but it ultimatey turned out to be neither when Sonnen pulled of a guillotine submission over the Brazilian in the first round.
In other main card action, Alistair Overeem collided in a Heavyweight co-main event that was more than 13-feet tall combined, two hard-hitting monsters looking to stake his claim as a potential title contender. After an early flurry precipitated by debilitating knees to the body, Browne stormed back from near extinction to score an Anderson Silva -esque first round front kick knockout as the first round drew to a close.
Urijah Faber was also back in action, surviving an early scare of his own to dominate Yuri Alcantara and sweep the judges scorecards, proving once again that he is indeed the third-best Bantamweight fighter on the planet behind division champion Dominick Cruz and interim kingpin Renan Barao.
No real surprise, impressive performance nonetheless.
Anyway, as usual, all the stars of the show came to dish the dirt on the event immediately afterward at the post-fight press conference, including Shogun, Sonnen, Browne, Faber and Matt Brown, among others. Naturally, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White -- who almost always emcees the post-fight event wrap up shows -- was also in attendance.
