The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) wanted to make a big splash with its first ever fight card on the newly debuted Fox Sports 1 tonight (Sat., Aug. 17, 2013) at the TD Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts, with its UFC Fight Night 26: "Shogun vs. Sonnen" event. The headlining attraction featured Mauricio Rua hoping to defend all of Brazil against loud mouthed xenophobe Chael Sonnen in a battle perhaps lacking in divisional relevance but long in name value.
It didn't last long.
That's because Sonnen did what Sonnen does and used his wrestling, like he always does, to toss Rua to the mat and work his usual top game. Heavy in volume, but light on actual damage, or at least it always appears that way.
This time, though, he added a little wrinkle that proved to make all the difference.
Instead of being content with pounding away at "Shogun" and wearing him down over a five-round period of time, Sonnen decided to pull guard while jumping a guillotine choke. It looked tight, but don't they all?
Before you could let Joe Rogan's words sink in, though, the Brazilian was slowly tapping, signifying his want for his foe to release the hold. That was it. It was all over.
Chael Sonnen def. Shogun Rua via guillotine choke in round one.
Let that sentence sink in, Maniacs.
