Urijah Faber's road back to a title shot at 135-pounds continued tonight (Sat., Aug. 17, 2013) at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, at the UFC Fight Night 26: "Shogun vs. Sonnen" event on Fox Sports 1, as "The California Kid" battled fellow contender Yuri Alcantara.
Unbelievably enough, Alcantara jumped Faber early and had full mount, an incredibly dominant position, within the first 10 seconds of the bout. Then, suddenly, he was attacking an arm while Faber was bucking around and trying to get out of the undesirable position he so quickly found himself in.
Before long, Yuri was on his back and attacking from there. Faber, not one to take this lying down, unloaded a series of punches to his opponent's head using the video screen above the cage to find his target.
He rolled out to escape and finally managed to get back to his feet, where he had Yuri flying around for a takedown. In mid-air, Alcantara threw his legs over to attempt a triangle once they hit the mat, but it was unsuccessful. At that point, Faber moved to half guard and started working ground-n-pound with big elbows and punches.
The first round came to a close with the kid from California on top. What a wild start.
Faber came out ready to fire in the second, too. He immediately worked for a takedown and was back on top in a superior position in short order. From there, he avoided the challenging positions he found himself in during the opening round while firing off offense that would score him points with the judges.
The second stanza wasn't nearly as eventful as the first, but it did see Faber reassert himself.
The final frame, well, it was basically a repeat of the second. After all that initial excitement, Faber centered himself, got out of trouble, and took care of business using top control, ground striking, and superior position. Alcantara tried to threaten with submissions where he could, but there weren't any to be had.
Judges: 30-26, 30-26, and 30-27, all in favor of Faber.
