With the Speed channel being re-branded Fox Sports 1, the powers that be wanted the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to kick off the launch in style with a stacked line-up of fights. That's just what's happening with tonight's (Sat., Aug. 17, 2013) UFC Fight Night 26: "Shogun vs. Sonnen" event at the TD Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts.
The main event? Mauricio Rua vs. Chael Sonnen.
On the surface, the fight isn't good for much more than name value. After all, both fighters are coming off losses and aren't anywhere close to a title shot at either middleweight or light heavyweight, despite what promotion President Dana White has been saying.
Actually, both men are 2-3 in their last five bouts. That's shockingly average for two of the elite in the sport but that's what happens when the competition gets so stiff. The more important point here is that this is a fight that should draw plenty of viewers at a time when FOX is hoping to make a good impression.
MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire card on fight night (Sat., Aug. 17, 2013), starting with the Facebook "Prelims," which are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. ET, right on through the FOX-Sports televised under card bouts and then main card action, which is slated to air at 8 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.
See you then!
