We knew it was happening, now we know when (and where).
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) wants to see who the baddest grappler is at 170 pounds. Well, now it's going to find out, after matchmaker Joe Silva paired off Demian Maia and Jake Shields for a welterweight main event at UFC Fight Night 29, scheduled for Oct. 9, 2013 at Jose Correa Gymnasium in Barueri, Brazil.
MMA Fighting brought word of the date and venue earlier today.
Maia (18-4) has been unstoppable since dropping down from the middleweight division back in 2012, going undefeated with three dominant wins over Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story and Jon Fitch. The Brazilian can add himself to the very short list of title contenders to challenge the winner of the UFC 167 main event between Georges St. Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks.
He just has to get rid of Shields to do it.
That could be easier said than done against the former Strikeforce 185-pound champion, who is fresh off an underwhelming performance against Tyron Woodley at UFC 161 earlier this year. Despite his inconsistency inside the Octagon, Shields (28-6-1) has fought a who's-who of top contenders and won't be intimidated by his opponent's skill set.
American Jiu-Jitsu vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Who ya' got?
UFC Fight Night 29 is also expected to feature a co-main event with hometown hero Erick Silva, as he faces off against division stalwart "Stun Gun" Kim in a battle of top contenders. Jeremy Stephens vs. Rony Jason will also collide in an intriguing featherweight match up.
