Dana White: Jon Jones now the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter

Paul Abell-US PRESSWIRE

UFC President Dana White has moved Jon Jones into the top spot in his pound-for-pound rankings following Anderson Silva's knockout loss to Chris Weidman in the UFC 162 main event.

With Anderson Silva crashing and burning at UFC 162, there is a new name atop Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White's pound-for-pound list.

That name is Jon Jones, the current UFC Light Heavyweight champion.

Silva fell from the No. 1 spot on White's list of the greatest fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today following his devastating second-round knockout loss to Chris Weidman in the UFC 162 main event on Saturday (July 6, 2013) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

White had been promoting "The Spider" as the best fighter on the planet for a majority of the nearly seven years he held the Middleweight title, but with his record-setting run now over that means some one has to take his place.

Jones is that man, and quite frankly many already ranked "Bones" at the top of the list, but now White does as well.

The UFC boss told reporters about the change to his rankings in a media scrum (watch it here) following the UFC 162 post-fight press conference.

Even though Weidman defeated Silva, White feels the Brazilian is still ahead of the man he just lost too in the pound-for-pound rankings due to his overall body of work over the years, although Weidman is clearly right on his way to make a claim for the top spot himself.

While Silva's unbeaten streak inside the Octagon is officially over, Jones will look to solidify his place at the top of White's list when he puts his 205-pound title on the line for a record sixth time against No. 1 contender Alexander Gustafsson in the main event of UFC 165 on Sept. 21, 2013.
