Perhaps the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the history of mixed martial arts, Anderson Silva, returned to action to defend his middleweight throne against Chris Weidman at tonight's (Sat., July 6, 2013) UFC 162: "Silva vs. Weidman" pay-per-view (PPV) at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a fight many predicted he would lose.
And that's exactly what happened.
The way it went down was incredible. Silva was taken down early, and Weidman worked his game from the top. He did okay there, though he failed to cause much damage. In fact, he was so ineffective that when "The Spider" got back to his feet, he started toying with him.
And that was his fatal mistake.
As he's done in past fights against inferior opposition, the Brazilian started bobbing his head with his hands down, daring Weidman to come in and knock him out.
He likely didn't expect that that's exactly what the New Jersey native would do.
After missing on a couple shots during a rush in the second, Weidman caught Silva with a clean left hook that knocked him out. The follow up punches, about three of them landing straight on the chin, were academic.
The king has fallen.
