Perhaps the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the history of mixed martial arts, Anderson Silva, returned to action to defend his middleweight throne against Chris Weidman at tonight's (Sat., July 6, 2013) UFC 162: "Silva vs. Weidman" pay-per-view (PPV) at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a fight many predicted he would lose.
Round one opened with Silva circling out and Weidman shooting in rather quickly for a takedown, one he earned with relative ease as "The Spider" slid across his back. That put Weidman on top and, no different than Chael Sonnen before him, he looked to do some damage from there.
It worked, too. The Brazilian champion struggled to do much of anything other than defend from his back.
Weidman managed to get a hold of a knee bar, then a heel hook, but Silva worked his way out of both positions and got back to his feet. That's when he went into cocky mode, keeping his hands down and allowing Weidman to back him up against the fence.
After that, "The Spider" put his hands on his hips and told his foe to bring the power. He ate a few jabs just for the hell of a it and then laughed straight in Weidman's face. He called for more offense but Chris could not oblige.
It was amazing. Weidman, apparently intimidated, didn't even attempt another takedown before the round ended. When it did, the two kissed.
