Earlier this week, Brazilian news outlet SporTV Globo reported that only 25% of tickets had been sold for Saturday's (July 6, 2013) event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The numbers, if true, would have been extremely worrisome for UFC officials; however, at Thursday's (July 4, 2013) pre-fight press conference, White provided the actual attendance and gate figures.
According to White, UFC 162 has sold approximately 12,400 tickets for a gate of $4.26 million.
For comparison, last year's July 4th weekend event, UFC 148, which was headlined by a middleweight championship grudge match between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, ended up with a record setting mixed martial arts (MMA) gate of $6.9 million with just over 15,000 people in attendance.
This year, Silva is back to headline on July 4th weekend again, except this time against the relatively unheralded Chris Weidman in a fight with far less build.
While it's likely a lot of tickets were purchased by Las Vegas casino and later comp'd to high rollers, the UFC has to be happy with two days still left before the event.
