With Demian Maia pulled from this weekend's UFC 163 fight card because of an injury to originally scheduled opponent Josh Koscheck, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been looking to rebook the Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace for a future fight card.
While no date or location was mentioned, Ariel Helwani reported on Tuesday's (July 30, 2013) edition of FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight" that the world's leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion will likely book Maia against fellow Welterweight grappling stand out Jake Shields.
The match up was first reported in Brazil over the weekend; however, nothing concrete came to light. That's no longer the case, though, because the 170-pound match up is indeed in the works.
If the Brazilian can keep his win-streak alive and take out a second-straight former UFC title challenger in Shields, then he will certainly be on the short-list of contenders to challenge the winner of the UFC 167 title fight between Georges St. Pierre and Johny Hendricks.
Meanwhile, Shields (28-6-1, 1 NC) will be presented with an opportunity to take out a highly regarded fighter in Maia after a very underwhelming performance against Tyron Woodley at UFC 161 earlier this year.
The Cesar Gracie-trained fighter picked up the split decision over Woodley; however, it was far from the kind of fight viewers were expecting as Shields walked away with a split decision. Nevertheless, Shields is undefeated in his past three trips in the Octagon and is slowly, but surely, working his way back up the rankings.
It is unclear at this time when or where Demian Maia vs. Jakes Shields will take place, but there is a good chance it will be before the end of 2013 because both men have only had one chance to compete in this calendar year.
MMAmania.com will have more news and notes on this match up as they become available.
