The main event of the UFC on Fox 8: "Johnson vs. Moraga" network television show from the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington, tonight (Sat., July 27, 2013) featured Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson putting his title on the line against rising star John Moraga.
Or at least we were supposed to believe as much. It was hard to know going on, considering his first two Octagon bouts took place on Facebook in front of an audience of maybe a few thousand people.
He failed to impress much in the first round, thanks largely to an inability to do much more than anyone else could against the speedy champion. He defended, landed a shot or two, but ended up taken down and closed the round fending off submission attempts.
The second saw the takedown come far quicker, as "Mighty Mouse" was on top in control within the first minute. He spent most of the round in dominant positions, emphatically bringing it to a close with vicious elbows on the floor after threatening with a kimura.
It was all Johnson through two.
Johnson continued to establish his dominance in the third round, coming close to what would have likely been a fight ending submission close to the end of the frame. After battling out, Moraga earned his first takedown of the evening, but there was no doubting he was down three rounds to zero on the judges scorecards.
A finish would have to come for him to have a chance at victory. That or a screwjob.
Moraga's greatest success came in the fourth round after landing a hard straight right hand that stunned the champion and had him backing up. A follow up flying knee missed and Johnson got out of trouble with a double leg takedown.
But he was bloodied.
The final frame came and with it yet another takedown from "Mighty Mouse," his 10th of the contest. Then, finally, after so much hard work to get there, Johnson grabbed another arm and this time he didn't let it go, earning a tap and retaining his strap.
