FOX 8: MacDonald decisions Ellenberger in snoozer

Rory MacDonald may be the best welterweight up-and-comer out there but he didn't look like it in a unanimous decision victory over Jake Ellenberger tonight (Sat., July 27, 2013) at UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle.

MacDonald cruises in third; Ellenberger falls flat

The co-main event of the UFC on Fox 8: "Johnson vs. Moraga" network television show from the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington, featured Canadian wunderkind Rory MacDonald putting his top welterweight ranking on the line against fellow 170-pound beast Jake Ellenberger. The two came into this evening with visions of a title shot dancing in their heads but an impressive performance was likely needed.

The boo birds were out in force at the start of the third, the crowd well aware they were likely heading for another five minutes of sitting on their hands. The two fighters in the cage started slow, but that had more to do with Ellenberger's near complete failure to find his way inside.

You can't hit what you can't reach and all that.

MacDonald stayed patient, ignoring the live audience and working the game plan he came in with. For each strike Ellenberger came in with, he hit air and likely found himself fending off a jab for his trouble.

With two minutes to go, even the announcers were calling for "The Juggernaut" to just go crazy and leave it all in the cage. It's not like he was winning anyway.

He didn't take the advice he didn't hear, though he did finally earn a takedown with one minute left. He couldn't do anything with it, though, and that was that.

Yowzers.

MacDonald ahead on Ellenberger through two rounds

The co-main event of the UFC on Fox 8: "Johnson vs. Moraga" network television show from the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington, featured Canadian wunderkind Rory MacDonald putting his top welterweight ranking on the line against fellow 170-pound beast Jake Ellenberger. The two came into this evening with visions of a title shot dancing in their heads but an impressive performance was likely needed.

The second round looked like it would play out much like the first after the opening minute. MacDonald was still coming forward, utilizing good footwork, a nice jab, and effective range to neutralize all of Ellenberger's offense, but good god, this was boring as shit.

Effective, though.

The commentary team of Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan wondered if "The Juggernaut" was giving "Ares" too much respect. Right on cue, he shot in for a takedown, but that failed and the remainder of the round was contested in the same way the first eight minutes or so was.

Stalemate.

Stalemate in round 1 of MacDonald vs. Ellenberger

Round one saw both men race to the center of the cage, attempting to establish that ever elusive "Octagon control" you hear so much about but never really understand. "Ares" reach advantage gave him an early edge, allowing him to establish range and stay away from Ellenberger's power right hand.

And his power left, for that matter.

Meanwhile, MacDonald's offense consisted of a light jab and a lot of feints. He boxed dirty when they clinched up, but that was a brief exchange and very little damage was dealt.

Or at least that's how it appeared.

Really, the first round was a stalemate.
