Demetrious Johnson's latest defense of his flyweight title against John Moraga may be going on last when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) invades the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington, tonight (Sat., July 27, 2013) at UFC on Fox 8, but the co-main event welterweight bout pitting Rory MacDonald against Jake Ellenberger may be the real main event.
That's because it's stolen much of the thunder from the tiny titans going on after them, thanks largely to the fact that MacDonald alone has so much hype behind him, it's enough to carry an entire division.
That may be what he ends up doing here shortly, as a victory here could earn him a shot at the welterweight title. He's said he won't fight teammate and training partner Georges St. Pierre but it's entirely possible Johny Hendricks takes the 170-pound strap soon and that ceases to be an issue.
Then the Canadian wunderkind can go about his business of (possibly) being the best in the world at his weight class.
Standing in his way is Ellenberger, himself no slouch with all the right tools to cause problems for even the very best in the world. And if he's lucky, he could be the guy to run through both MacDonald and St. Pierre en route to claiming his spot at the top.
First up, "Ares."
MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire card on fight night (Sat., July 27, 2013), starting with the Facebook "Prelims," which are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET, right on through the FX-televised under card bouts and then main card action, which is slated to air at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
