Controversial professional boxing veteran turned mixed martial arts (MMA) crossover Ricardo Mayorga will be getting back in the cage later this month for his sophomore MMA fight.
"El Matador" will take on American Rene Martinez in the main event of Omega MMA 9 on July 27, 2013 in Mayorga's hometown of Managua, Nicaragua.
Mayorga made waves last May in his MMA debut when he was dominated on the ground for over two rounds by his opponent Wesley Tiffer only to land an illegal knee strike to Tiffer's spine in the third round that forced the fight to be stopped (watch it here).
The match was originally deemed as a (technical) knockout victory for Mayorga, who came into the fight severely overweight; however, just a few days later the Nicaraguan MMA commission overturned the result to a "No Contest" and suspended the fighter for three months.
Those three months run out just in time for Mayorga to enter the cage against Martinez (4-0-1), a fighter who has been competing professionally since 2009, but has not had a fight since April 2012.
It is unknown at this time what weight class the fight will be contested under.
