Although tonight's (Sat., June 8, 2013) event at the Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Brazil, is dubbed UFC on FUEL TV 10: "Nogueira vs. Werdum," it doubles as the Finale for the second season of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil. William Macario won four fights to get to the final as a member of Team Nogueira while Leonardo Santos only had to win three, also as a member of Team Nogueira.
The reason? The man who defeated him in the semifinals, Santiago Ponzinibbio, broke his hand during that fight and left the door open for a second chance at the glass trophy.
He failed to make the most of it.
It wasn't for lack of trying. He battled hard through the first round, scoring plenty of points exchanging punches and working an effective game plan that appeared to be on its way to earning him a that six-figure contract. But into the second, Santos clinched up to earn a trip takedown and after some battling on the floor, he locked in an arm triangle choke.
Macario struggled to stay alive but there was simply too much time left on the clock. He couldn't hold out for the final 18 seconds of the round and had to tap away his dream.
Both men broke down into tears in the aftermath of the bout, Santos happily jumping the cage to celebrate with UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo and Macario falling apart back inside it, his cornermen hardly able to console him.
That's the fight game, folks, in all its glory and heartbreak.
