On Thursday (June 6, 2013) World Series of Fighting (WSOF) president Ray Sefo announced Tyson Griffin would be making his promotional debut at WSOF 4 on Aug. 10, 2013, and now the name of his opponent has come to light.
In his first WSOF appearance, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran will reportedly take on longtime veteran of the sport Gesias Cavalcante in a featured lightweight contest at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
Griffin (16-6) has only fought one time since being released by the UFC in Oct. 2011, defeating fellow UFC alumni and winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) reality show Efrain Escudero by unanimous decision under the Resurrection Fighting Alliance (RFA) banner.
After a two-fight stint in the featherweight division that saw him go 1-1, Griffin opted to return to his more natural weight of 155-pounds upon signing with WSOF and gets one of the most experienced fighters in the world for his first bout.
Cavalcante (17-7-1, 2 NC) will be looking to rebound from a controversial loss in his last bout when a ringside doctor declared him unfit to continue due to a cut sustained early in the first round at the hands of Justin Gaethje.
The end result of his last bout was a continuation of the hard times the 30-year-old has fallen on as of late. "JZ" has recorded just three wins in his last 10 bouts and has not earned a (technical) knockout victory since Sept. 2007.
The Brazilian is 1-1 under the WSOF banner and will undoubtedly be looking to right the wrong in his last fight and finally rebuild some of the momentum he had going earlier in his career.
