Although it's starting to feel more and more commonplace when women step inside the Octagon to compete in mixed martial arts (MMA) matches under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banner, we're still at that point when history is being made for nearly every fight.
That will be the case later tonight (Sat., June 15, 2013) at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, when Alexis Davis, the UFC's first Canadian female fighter, takes on Rosi Sexton, the UFC's first British female fighter, on the main card of the UFC 161: "Evans vs. Henderson" pay-per-view (PPV) event.
Davis feels the weight of the occasion but is excited to make her debut:
"Being the first Canadian female fighter signed and being the first female Canadian fighter to be in the UFC, it's huge for me. Being able to come back to Canada, it's a great experience that this is going to be my debut. Just being able to have a stronger clinch game to see where the fight is going to play out, I think it's going to be an advantage for me, for sure. I just gotta go for that 'W' and it's become easier and easier for me to do that with the more experience that I have and the longer my career goes on."
Sexton is all business, secure in the knowledge it was always going to be this way:
"I think my cage work is good. I can take people down from there pretty comfortably. That's one of my strengths that's going to come into play. A win here would mean a lot to me. This opportunity has been a long time coming and I intend to make the most of it."
Now they fight, history or not.
