How did T.J. Grant earn a lightweight title shot with his upset victory over Gray Maynard last night? Find out inside.

Two of the top lightweights on the roster duked it out for a title shot last night (May 25, 2013) as T.J. Grant battled former two-time title challenger Gray Maynard on the UFC 160 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The stakes had been raised with UFC President Dana White proclaiming that the winner would be fighting 155 pound champion Ben Henderson next.

Maynard started strong, backing off Grant with some heavy lead left hooks and uppercuts straight down the middle. The power shots from Maynard gained the respect of Grant, who ate a few of them.

Grant got some of his own offense in, and this was the key difference for both men as while Maynard was winging heavy strikes, Grant's seemed to have a more pronounced effect on Maynard, causing him to stop in his tracks a few times.

As Grant gained confidence, he stepped forward aggressively and blasted Maynard with a heavy right hand, hurting the former contender badly. This opened the floodgates as the Canadian immediately swarmed Maynard with everything but the kitchen sink, hammering Maynard with elbows, punches and knees.

Eventually, Maynard was overwhelmed and he dropped to the canvas. After a few more unanswered blows, the ref mercifully put a stop to it.
