This is a big year for superheroes.
Iron Man 3 was released last week, Man of Steel comes out in June and shortly after that, the sequel to Thor will be in theaters. Despite his popularity, none of those three summer blockbusters will feature reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.
"You have to treat him like just another opponent. You respect what he's done in this sport. Of course you do. But you can't get caught up in it. Guess what? He's a person just like I am, he's got two arms, two legs, two eyes, like I do. I'm not fighting a superhero, I'm fighting another person, and it's my job to defeat him. Simple as that. I feel like I have the right mix of skills, the desire, the determination, to get the job done. The UFC thinks enough of me to give me the title shot. To those who might think I don't deserve this yet, all I can say is, tune in on July 6 and I'll show you otherwise."
But this is "Spider," man.
Weidman will challenge one of the sport's all-time greats in the main event of the UFC 162: "Silva vs. Weidman" pay-per-view (PPV) event, which pops off at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, over Fourth of July Weekend (July 6, 2013).
Click on any UFC 162 thread (like this one) and you'll see Weidman get himself into hot water with Silva fans, who want to know what the former Ring of Combat (ROC) champ has done to warrant such confidence heading into a showdown against perhaps the best pound-for-pound mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter in history.
Tune in this summer to find out if he's Doomsday, or just doomed.
