UFC on FUEL TV 9 Results: Gegard Mousasi wins lopsided decision over Ilir Latifi

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Ilir Latifi had some pretty big shoes to fill on Saturday when he took over for Alexander Gustafsson in the UFC on FUEL TV 9 main event against Gegard Mousasi. Would "The Sledgehammer" fulfill his Cinderella story? Or turn into a pumpkin before midnight?

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back in action earlier today (April 6, 2013) with UFC on FUEL TV 9: "Mousasi vs. Latifi," emanating from the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Hard to believe that just a few days ago, we didn't even know who was fighting in the main event.

Top light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson, busted open last week in practice and ruled medically unfit to compete, was forced to step aside and watch his teammate Ilir Latifi take over for him in the headlining fight against Strikeforce import and well-rounded International star Gegard Mousasi.

Sorry folks, no surprises here.

This was basically a televised sparring session for Mousasi, who spent three rounds picking Latifi apart on his feet. Despite a late takedown in the final frame with some heavy punches from the top, "The Sledgehammer" was never really in the fight and had a face like a London broil by the time it was all said and done.

High risk, low reward.

Securing a finish over the stocky Swede would have done nothing to advance Mousasi's position in the 205-pound division. A win is a win and there was really no point in affording Latifi any opportunities to land a wild haymaker or untimely takedown.

In fact, "The Dreamcather" hardly broke a sweat, so it wouldn't come as a surprise to see him paired off against the rapidly-healing "Mauler" sooner rather than later.

Business is unfinished.
