It was one of the strangest moments in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) history.
There was Jon Jones, on a high, celebrating his record-tying fifth consecutive light heavyweight title defense in the Octagon after a first-round destruction of Chael Sonnen in the UFC 159 main event.
Then the mood quickly shifted.
UFC cageside commentator Joe Rogan noticed the champion walking around the Octagon with bloody pouring from his foot and his big toe mangled in a disturbing fashion.
No one knew what had happened, or how it had happened, but you could see from the look on Jones' face that once his half-connected toe was pointed out to him, the adrenaline slowly went away and the pain hit him like a ton of bricks.
"Bones" courageously gutted out a post-fight interview with Rogan, but the whole scene was truly surreal to watch. Had the fight made it out of the first round, it's likely the toe would have caused the doctor to stop the fight and Jones would have lost his belt.
Fortunately, though, the 25-year-old earned his first first-round stoppage since 2010 and avoided what could have been a horrible series of events.
Jones' toe is now stitched up and he will begin rehab as soon as possible to prepare for his eventual return to the cage.
