All the trash talk and hype finally came to a close tonight (Sat., April 27, 2013) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, as Jon Jones put his light heavyweight championship on the line against the man who talked his way into the bout, Chael Sonnen, in the main event of UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" on pay-per-view.
Round one saw Sonnen come out firing with punches, most of them coming in the clinch after Jones grabbed him up and wouldn't let go. This was partially to work for takedowns, of which he got two within the first minute of the fight.
Both times, Sonnen got back to his feet without much issue.
"Bones" pushed Sonnen against the fence and got creative with his striking, electing to keep wrist control on one arm so he could break free and throw spinning elbows with his other. It was impressive visually but Chael fought through it.
Still, when he wanted a takedown, Jones got it with ease. From there, the champion started raining down elbows, good to do some solid damage while draining Sonnen of his energy.
It's not easy working from the bottom with a 220-pound man on top of you.
In fact, Jones was doing such work that Chael covered up and the ensuing onslaught was enough for the referee to call it.
