UFC on Fox 7: "Henderson vs Melendez" from HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., is officially in the books after a thrilling evening (April 20, 2013) of mixed martial arts (MMA) action.
The main event of the evening, Ben Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez, was a pivotal 155-pound bout that pit the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion against his 155-pound Strikeforce counterpart. It was a close match (see the FightMetric report here), but "Smooth" apparently did enough in the eyes of the judges to take a split decision over "El Nino" (watch highlights here).
In other main card action, Daniel Cormier -- the undefeated Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner -- made his official Octagon debut opposite former UFC division champion Frank Mir. It was another stiff test for "DC," but once again the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA)-trained fighter overcame his physical disadvantages to earn a clear unanimous decision (watch highlights here).
Josh Thomson, meanwhile, returned to the Octagon for the first time in nearly a decade to put his shin stamp on the forehead of Nate Diaz, finishing The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 winner via strikes for the first-time ever in his professional MMA career.
It was so stunning that "The Punk" was greased an extra $50,000 for scoring the UFC on FOX 7 "Knockout of the Night."
Anyway, as usual, all the stars of the show came to dish the dirt on the event immediately afterward at the post-fight press conference, including Henderson, Melendez, Cormier, Matt Brown and Chad Mendes, among others. Naturally, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White -- who almost always emcees the post-fight event wrap up shows -- was also in attendance.
