If there was ever any doubt that Daniel Cormier could hang with the big boys in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), he erased that tonight (Sat., April 20, 2013) when he soundly defeated Frank Mir via unanimous decision in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 7: "Henderson vs. Melendez" at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. "DC" used a clinch heavy game plan to get there, infuriating fans at the arena but completely neutralizing Mir's only offensive hope, which were his kicks. They were effective when he could get them off but that wasn't very often and, in fact, he made a few baffling decisions later in the fight when he was clearly down on the scorecards but played right into Cormier's game by initiating a clinch of his own. Cormier wasn't altogether happy with his performance, later saying he doesn't feel he deserves a title shot on the strength of it, but at the very least he has announced his arrival on the scene in the UFC.
