UFC on Fox 7 results: Ben Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez Fight Metric report backs up judges decision

USA TODAY Sports

The Fight Metric report for the tightly contested lightweight scrap between Ben Henderson and Gilbert Melendez at UFC on Fox 7 tonight (Sat., April 20, 2013) in San Jose seems to back up the judges decision to award the victory to Henderson.

In the headlining attraction of tonight's (Sat., April 20, 2013) UFC on Fox 7: "Henderson vs. Melendez" event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, Ben Henderson defeated Gilbert Melendez via split decision on scores of 48-47, 47-48, and 48-47. Naturally, if it was close enough to warrant scores like that, it caused a great deal of controversy among the mixed martial arts (MMA) fan base.

Thankfully, we've got the wizards at Fight Metric to give us official statistics to help out.

And, well, the hard numbers seem to back up the judges decision. Here's how they look:

As you can see, Henderson landed far more strikes while throwing less, both significant and otherwise. The grappling game was mostly a wash, with Melendez credited with one takedown and "Smooth" failing on all four of his documented attempts.

It should be noted, the two spent next to no time on the mat throughout the 25-minute contest.

If you're wondering, a tweet from Mike Chiappetta tells us who the judges were and how they scored each round of the bout:

Maniacs, you know we want to hear how you scored it. And does the Fight Metric report sway your opinion in any way?
