Daniel Cormier made his long awaited Octagon debut tonight (Sat., April 20, 2013), as Frank Mir welcomed him to the big leagues in the co-main event of the UFC on Fox 7: "Henderson vs. Melendez" event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The bout represented Cormier's first true test on the big stage under the bright lights and could very well make him the next top contender in the heavyweight division.
Well, welcome to the big leagues, Mr. Cormier.
Mir's strategy was baffling at times, as he allowed himself to get caught up against the fence one too many times. Cormier, for his part, did everything he could to control where the fight took place and that meant plenty of clinch work and a whole lot of superior position mixed in with effective, timely strikes.
When all was said and done, Mir had his moments but simply couldn't match up to Cormier and the judges awarded him all three rounds, as he took the unanimous decision 30-27 across the board.
He's now 12-0 in his career with yet another victory over yet another former UFC heavyweight champion on his resume. Is it time to give him a title shot or what?
