LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, MAY 24, 2008: Wanderlie Silva celebrates his win atop the cage wall during "UFC 84: Ill Will" inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas - COPYRIGHT: Martin McNeil
What happens when you put fan favorite and veteran "Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva on free TV? People tune in!
Former PRIDE FC smasher Wanderlei Silva is known affectionately to his fans as "The Axe Murderer." Well, after knocking out Brian Stann last Saturday night (March 2, 2013) at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan, you can give him another title, as well.
He's the new "King of FUEL TV."
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and FUEL TV pulled in a record-setting 485,000 viewers for its UFC on FUEL TV 8: "Silva vs. Stann" event, more than twice the amount of eyeballs tuning in for the previous record of 217,000 set by UFC on FUEL TV 1: "Sanchez vs. Ellenberger" in early 2012.
MMA Fighting has more:
Both the pre-fight show (250,000 viewers) and post-fight show (219,000) became the second and third most-watched shows in station history. Even more impressive is the post-fight show didn't start until 1 a.m. The actual rating for the show is not yet available, but it should hover around the 1.0 range, a figure largely thought to be impossible for a station with the profile and dial position of FUEL.
If you book him, they will come.
In addition to the "All American" slaughter (watch it again here), Mark Hunt broke Stefan Struve's face (video proof) while former PRIDE FC Lightweight Champion Takanori Gomi was edged out by Diego Sanchez in "The Fireball Kid's" return to "The Land of the Rising Sun."
