Sad Easter, mixed martial arts (MMA) fans.
On a day when most individuals are celebrating, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight standout, Alexander Gustafsson, is perhaps mourning the loss of his upcoming UFC on Fuel TV 9 main event fight against Gegard Mousasi.
Swedish media outlet Sportspegeln today reported that "The Mauler" (via Kimura.se) suffered a significant cut in training and that he will be unable to compete against the "Dream Catcher" this upcoming Saturday (April 6, 2013) at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
No official confirmation has come from Gustafsson nor UFC at this time.
However, if indeed accurate, the injury would be a major blow to the top-heavy fight card, which features the prodigious Ryan Couture making his promotional debut opposite nine-fight UFC veteran and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 winner, Ross Pearson, in a Lightweight co-main event, as well as Matt Mitrione in a Heavyweight bout with Philip De Fries third from the top.
Definitely not the kind of supporting cast with cache who can full the gaping Swedish void.
Gustafsson is currently one of the very best in the 205-pound division, riding a six-fight win streak inside the Octagon after dropping his sophomore effort to Phil Davis at UFC 112 way back in 2010. After his unanimous decision win over Mauricio Rua at UFC on Fox 5 last month (Dec. 2012), it was widely believed that he would earn the next opportunity to challenge division champion Jon Jones.
The championship berth never materialized thanks to Chael Sonnen, however, a win over Mousasi more than likely would have punched his ticket.
