Let's take a look at the Fight Metric report from the controversial Diego Sanchez vs. Takanori Gomi fight from UFC on FUEL TV 8: "Silva vs. Stann" last night (Sat., March 2, 2013) in Japan, featuring Sanchez earning a split decision. But was it right?

Statistics cannot ever possibly tell the tale of a fight, or a game, or whatever else they're being used to quantify, but they are absolutely a useful tool to help us gain a deeper understanding of what we have witnessed.

Which is why we should absolutely take a look at the Fight Metric report for the controversial Diego Sanchez vs. Takanori Gomi bout at UFC on FUEL TV 8: "Silva vs. Stann" last night (March 2, 2013) in Saitama, Japan, that saw "The Dream" earn a split decision a few fans, experts, and even UFC President Dana White didn't agree with.

So let's see what Fight Metric tells us:

Gomi holds the edge in strikes, though the percentages are the same, while Sanchez credited with two successful takedowns. Interestingly enough, Fight Metric does not recognize Sanchez's kneebar in the first round as a submission attempt.

The one thing we can say with absolute certainty is this was a close fight. Yours truly would have scored it for Gomi.

Which way would you have gone, Maniacs?
