How do you go from up-and-comer to contender? Beat a guy like Chad Mendes.
Darren Elkins will only have a month off between fights, but that shouldn't be a problem considering he needed just three minutes (and an assist from Yves Lavigne) to put away Antonio Carvalho.
Fresh off his speedy technical knockout win over "Pato" last weekend at UFC 158 in Montreal, the fast-rising featherweight will step in for the injured Clay Guida to battle former division number one contender Chad Mendes at the upcoming UFC on FOX 7 event, scheduled for April 20, 2013 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
UFC brought word of the pending match-up earlier today.
In addition to his victory over Carvalho, Elkins (16-2) has won five straight and stands at 6-1 since joining the ZUFFA roster in early 2010. Mendes (13-1), meanwhile, rebounded from his loss Jose Aldo last year in Brazil with consecutive knockout wins over Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza.
Early predictions?
UFC on FOX 7 features a lightweight championship fight between Ben Henderson, looking to defend his world title against Strikeforce 155-pound title winner Gilbert Melendez in the Octagon debut for "El Nino," while another import, Daniel Cormier, will co-headline the event opposite former champion Frank Mir in a pivotal heavyweight showdown.
