Ronda Rousey win at 'awesome' UFC 157 event 'one of the biggest moments in all of sports'

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

History was made at UFC 157 last weekend in Anaheim, but was the moment as big as UFC President Dana White wanted it to be?

I get the impression Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White is pleased with how things turned out at UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche," the historic combat sports event that took place last Saturday night (Feb. 23, 2013) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Sure, it was a big deal for mixed martial arts (MMA), witnessing Ronda Rousey defeat Liz Carmouche via first-round armbar (watch it here) in the main event of the first-ever pay-per-view (PPV) headlined by two women, but was it one of the biggest moments in all of sports?

White gushes at the UFC 157 post-fight show on FUEL TV:

"It was one of the biggest moments in all of sports. Never in the history of this company have we had so much media attention. And tonight 'SportsCenter' was Tweeting non-stop about the fight. Tonight is a monumental night and tomorrow … Let me tell you what: I never realized, it's 2013, the hate that some weirdos have in this country about women in sports. It's sickening and ridiculous. And tonight, the main event was one of the best fights of the night…. All the talk about Carmouche being a set up fight for Ronda, and all the stupidness that people spew leading up to an awesome event like this … I guarantee Ronda isn't going to be chewing a lot of food tonight at the after party. Those hurt and she was cranking that thing hard."

UFC 157 attracted an avalanche of media coverage in and out of MMA, but did it attract PPV buyers? That remains to be seen. It certainly did well at the box office, drawing an attendance of 15,525 for a live gate of $1,200,000. The big question now is, does this thing have legs?

It will be interesting to see how "one of the biggest moments in all of sports" holds up over time.
