With the prospect of a light heavyweight championship fight hanging in the balance, Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida walked to the cage tonight (Feb. 23, 2013) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, eager to make their mark and not just earn the shot but take it.
The second round started off exactly the way the first did. It took less time for Machida to establish his game, though, as he quickly landed a hard front kick and continued bouncing in and out with shots that were scoring points and doing some damage along the way.
Henderson struggled mightily to do what he wanted so badly to do, which is put his heavy right hand on "The Dragon's" chin. As color commentator Joe Rogan was sure to remind us, though, it only takes one to turn the lights out and end the night spectacularly.
Instead of blitzing, which would have been an awful idea, "Hendo" stayed patient and picked his spots. He found some success but Machida's style wasn't changing a bit.
Henderson's leg kicks were there for the taking but the hard right hand wasn't landing, including late in the round when he started rushing in hoping to land that haymaker.
Only one round left to pull it off.
