Court McGee's welterweight debut was a successful one at UFC 157 tonight (Feb. 23, 2013) in Anaheim, California, as he earned a unanimous decision over Josh Neer.
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 11 winner Court McGee made his welterweight debut against Josh Neer at tonight's (Sat., Feb. 23, 2013) UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" pay-per-view (PPV) event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, after back-to-back decision losses at 185-pounds.
But would the grass be any greener on the other side?
It would hit just as hard, that much was clear from the outset with Neer tagging him early with a hard right hand that had him staggered briefly. He recovered and got on his giddy up while putting together combinations and slowly but surely establishing himself in the pocket.
The volume was overwhelming Neer's short bursts of power.
McGee's biggest success of the opening frame came when he popped Neer in the liver and had him keeled over and looking like he wanted to upchuck all over the Octagon. The finish was close but never came in the ensuing onslaught, with a brief rear-naked choke attempt that was stopped only by the horn.
The second round saw a complete reversal of fortunes, with Neer turning the tide thanks to a series of hard punches that were landing clean on McGee's chin and backing him up. They were also throwing off his timing, allowing "The Dentist" to operate inside and box him up with a few nice power shots.
That meant it was likely even heading into the third, where the two went back-and-forth until McGee went hard for the late takedown and used that to score points to sway the judges in his favor.
The scorecards came out in favor of McGee 30-27 across the board.
