Lyoto Machida vs Dan Henderson fight results UFC 157, Round 3

With the prospect of a light heavyweight championship fight hanging in the balance, Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida walked to the cage tonight (Feb. 23, 2013) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, eager to make their mark and not just earn the shot but take it.

Round three brought a sense of urgency from both men, as Henderson knew he needed to land clean to finally establish his offense while Machida's game plan remained solid.

After about a minute, "Hendo" earned his first takedown of the bout, tripping "The Dragon" to the floor and landing in his full guard. He didn't do a whole lot with it at first, expelling a lot of his energy simply trying to shift himself up to land a few elbows.

Machida made it hard on him, thoug, and finally the referee called for Henderson to advance position or he would stand them up. It didn't matter anyway, seeing as Lyoto got himself out of his predicament just seconds later.

With just one minute left, the two were locked in what amounted to a staredown as they circled each other looking for any opening that may present itself to end the fight with one perfectly placed shot.

Machida was the only one to land in this situation, with two hard kicks slapping against Henderson's skin. The horn sounded and it seemed "The Dragon" had done enough but would the judges agree?

Lyoto Machida vs Dan Henderson fight results UFC 157, Round 2

With the prospect of a light heavyweight championship fight hanging in the balance, Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida walked to the cage tonight (Feb. 23, 2013) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, eager to make their mark and not just earn the shot but take it.

The second round started off exactly the way the first did. It took less time for Machida to establish his game, though, as he quickly landed a hard front kick and continued bouncing in and out with shots that were scoring points and doing some damage along the way.

Henderson struggled mightily to do what he wanted so badly to do, which is put his heavy right hand on "The Dragon's" chin. As color commentator Joe Rogan was sure to remind us, though, it only takes one to turn the lights out and end the night spectacularly.

Instead of blitzing, which would have been an awful idea, "Hendo" stayed patient and picked his spots. He found some success but Machida's style wasn't changing a bit.

Henderson's leg kicks were there for the taking but the hard right hand wasn't landing, including late in the round when he started rushing in hoping to land that haymaker.

Only one round left to pull it off.

Lyoto Machida vs Dan Henderson fight results UFC 157, Round 1

With the prospect of a light heavyweight championship fight hanging in the balance, Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida walked to the cage tonight (Feb. 23, 2013) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, eager to make their mark and not just earn the shot but take it.

In round one, Machida's elusiveness was evident early as Henderson lunged in but found nothing but air. "The Dragon" started in with the feints and hand movement that elicited little reaction from his American foe. In fact, "Hendo's" answer was the low kick set up he loves so much followed by a "U-S-A" chant from the crowd in Cali.

Push kicks and short jabs while Henderson came in was the name of the Brazilian's game. It was effective, too, considering Henderson's inability to make his way inside to put his hands on Machida's chin.

Really, it was all about frustration, though "Dangerous" Dan did manage to land a hard right hand late. Despite that, Machida's legs stayed under him and the first round actually closed with Machida landing a takedown.

Very interesting.
