A heavyweights collision is set for UFC on FUEL TV 9: "Gustafsson vs. Mousasi" in Sweden as Matt Mitrione and Phil De Fries will meet at the Ericsson Globe Arena on April 6, 2013.
Two heavyweights who were recently on the wrong end of knockout losses will try to rebound at UFC on FUEL TV 9: "Gustafsson vs. Mousasi" as The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 10 veteran Matt Mitrione takes on Phil De Fries in Stockholm, Sweden, on April 6, 2013.
Mitrione and De Fries were originally scheduled to face off at UFC 155 in December 2012; however, Mitrione was pulled from the card in favor of a match up with Roy Nelson while De Fries went on to face Todd Duffee.
UFC officials confirmed the heavyweight match up over the weekend.
Mitrione (5-2) stepped up on short notice to replace the injured Shane Carwin against Nelson at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale, but was knocked out by "Big Country" in the first round, marking his second consecutive defeat. "Meathead" took over one year off from the sport prior to the fight with Nelson to relocate to the Blackzilians camp in Florida - now it appears he is ready to fight consistently again.
The 34-year-old has racked up all five of his professional victories under the UFC banner; however, none of the opponents he holds wins over are still with the organization.
De Fries (9-2) didn't get much of a chance to do anything in his last fight against Duffee, as he was put away with strikes in just over two minutes. The defeat dropped the Englishman's record to 1-2 inside the Octagon, and he'll need a win at UFC on FUEL TV 9 or he could find himself looking for a new promotion to fight in.
The submission specialist has earned eight of his nine professional victories by way of tap out.
It is unknown at this time if Mitrione vs. De Fries will air on the main card, which airs on FUEL TV, or the preliminary portion of the card, which is likely to stream on Facebook.
UFC on FUEL TV 9: "Gustafsson vs. Mousasi" goes down April 9, 2013 from the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. The event headliner will see Alexander Gustafsson return to compete in his home country against former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi, who makes his UFC debut at the event.
