The Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman rematch was shaping up to be an exciting affair, as the two battled through an intense first round that featured a near finish in the main event of UFC 168 last night (Sat., Dec. 28, 2013) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Everything changed in the second.
Silva was throwing hard leg kicks; really hard. So hard, in fact, that it is believed by his corner that there were two successive kicks that ended his night and, though pure speculation at this point, possibly his career. The first cracked his shin bone, and the second broke it entirely.
He was immediately attended to before being carried off on a stretcher. Once he made it to the hospital, the break was bad enough to require emergency surgery.
Above is a photo gallery showcasing a visual breakdown of what happened and why. As you can see, Silva threw a leg kick that was checked perfectly by Weidman. The placement of the kick, combined with the force with which it was thrown, led to one of the most gruesome injuries in MMA history.
Best wishes to Mr. Silva on a speedy recovery.
