So all season long I'm watching the NFL on Fox and Sunday Night Football on NBC, and I'm getting bombarded by commercials for the new seasons of American Idol, The Singer, X-Factor, and other bullshit "talent" shows. Now we have had some great discussions on Mania about all sorts of music from rock to metal to hip-hop, all of it very good in their own particular way and none of it considered mainstream. Yet, here we are again about to get blasted with yet another round of indistinguishable pop garbage.
And yes, it is all indistinguishable. The proof is http://www.inquisitr.com/285841/pop-music-homogenized-study-finds-kids-these-days-dont-understand-good-music/ and http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/08/07/1117761/-McPop-Science-proves-pop-music-has-become-increasingly-homogenized-loud-bland.
How did this all happen? How did we go from having an incredible mix of American rock and roll, British Invasion rock, Motown, blues and other unique forms of music to a bunch of homogenized crap? I'll tell you how: Simon Fucking Cowell. He was assembling terrible boy band acts for years, assaulting just our radios, before spreading his monotoned filth to the television as well.
What if Cowell had never existed? How would the face of music have changed over the years? Eliminating him now would do no good, since that genie can't go back into the bottle. But suppose I could go back in time and kick his mother down a flight of stairs or subject her to an unfortunate incident with a toilet plunger. Maybe it wouldn't change anything, and pop music would still be just as awful as it is today and people with minimal talent would still be getting undeserved riches. But I would love to find out.
So what say you, Maniacs? If you could get back in time and eliminate someone and their entire effect on humanity, who would it be?
