The most eligible free agent in mixed martial arts (MMA), Ben Askren, is still without a promotional home, but he has a new team after it was announced that he has joined Evolve MMA. The former Bellator welterweight champion -- undefeated at 12-0 -- will prepare for all his future fights in Singapore although he has not severed ties with long-term trainer Duke Roufus, who will still be working with him.
Hear Roufus talk about the "Funky" future here.
Askren visited Evolve MMA last year and was apparently impressed enough to accept a formal offer to join the fight team where he will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters Rafael dos Anjos and Leandro Issa as well as ONE FC fighters Shinya Aoki, Eddie Ng, Bruno Pucci and Jake Butler.
With UFC apparently unwilling to pick up the former Bellator fighter and Askren seemingly no closer to signing the offer he received from WSOF, this will only fuel rumors that the two-time NCAA Division-1 national champion is going to sign with ONE FC and ply his trade with Asia's biggest MMA organization.
Askren was only 3-0 when he signed with Bellator but won the season two welterweight tournament and then defeated Lyman Good to win the title, a belt he would defend four times. He is currently coming off back-to-back stoppage wins over Karl Amoussou and Andrey Koreshkov and is universally ranked as being the best 170-pounder outside of UFC.
