A bantamweight bout between Leandro Issa and Russell Doane is the tenth fight to be added to the UFC Fight Night 34 card. Both men will be making their Octagon debuts when they face off at the Marina Bay Sands on Jan. 4, 2014 in Singapore.
Issa was signed on the back of his 11-3 record and comes into Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after a successful stint in ONE FC, which saw him challenge unsuccessfully for the inaugural 135-pound title. His opponent, Doane, is 12-3 overall and has won belts with multiple organizations, recently claiming the interim Tachi Palace bantamweight strap.
The fight is sure to go down well with the local fans because Issa has already fought six times in Singapore and is based full time at Evolve MMA. The Brazilian might not have won as many titles as his Hawaiian opponent, but he is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt who took gold at the 2004 Mundials.
In 2012, Doane beat Frank Baca to claim the King of the Cage 135-pound belt and earlier this year he won the equivalent Tachi Palace title by stopping Jared Papazian with strikes in the fourth round. He also has notable wins over Tyson Nam and Jon Delos Reyes, who also makes his UFC debut in Singapore, while his two recent losses came at the hands of Kyle Aguon and Michinori Tanaka.
Issa is coming off a decision win over Yusup Saadulaev and has also beaten Mazakazu Imanari and Soo Chul Kim competing under the ONE FC banner, although he had to endure the disappointment of being stopped in the second round of a rematch with Kim that had the promotion's inaugural 135-pound strap at stake.
Although Issa is primarily a grappler he has been transformed into a well rounded mixed marital artist since joining Evolve MMA and has showcased rapidly improving striking in his recent fights. Doane is a member of the renowned 808 Top Team in Hawaii and has a background in wrestling and boxing.
UFC Fight Night 34 will be headlined by a welterweight bout between Tarec Saffiedine and Hyun Gyu Lim, who replaced the injured Jake Ellenberger. Currently in need of an opponent is Tatsuya Kawajiri after Hacran Dias pulled out of their featherweight bout.
