This mixed martial arts (MMA) Welterweight match up has all the makings of a nice little festival of standing and banging. Assuming, of course, that two people with striking backgrounds don't try and exploit each others' ground games instead.
Young Australian Robert Whittaker will face Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson at UFC 170, which takes place at Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada. on Feb. 22, 2014. FOX Sports 1 was first to report on the booking, making it the sixth fight booked for the "Sin City" card.
Whittaker, the winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): "Smashes" -- the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) international "Nation vs. Nation" series that pitted Australia against England -- is coming off the first loss of his Octagon career to Court McGee.
Thompson, the much-hyped karateka, came into UFC with a roaring entrance, head-kicking Dan Stittgen into the nether and back-flipping his way onto a hype train of rarefied proportions. Matt Brown ended that, but given "The Immortal" streak as of late, that wasn't quite as embarrassing as it was then.
"Wonderboy" has since reeled off two in a row, including a highlight knockout of Chris Clements.
UFC 170 is expected to feature Rashad Evans, who will introduce Daniel Cormier to the Light Heavyweight division, in the main event of the evening. In other pay-per-view (PPV) main card action, Top 10-ranked Welterweight veterans Demian Maia and Rory MacDonald will collide in the co-main event. "Evans vs. Cormier" will also showcase a nice dust-up between Rafael Dos Anjos and Rustam Khabilov as well as Mike Pyle taking on T.J. Waldburger and Raphael Assuncao vs. Francisco Rivera.
Don't be surprised if the winners from some of these fights get title shots in 2014, especially if Cormier, dos Anjos and/or Assuncao keep up their winning ways.
