Last week Sonnen -- who serves as head coach against Wanderlei Silva on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) "Brazil 3," made good on an earlier promise and officially invited one-time rival Anderson Silva to join his coaching staff.
"Unfortunately, I won’t be in Brazil so I won’t be able to accept his invitation," the former 185-pound kingpin told reporters on Tuesday's (Dec. 17, 2013) media conference call (listen to full audio replay here). "But it would be great for the sport because all the athletes in the house will be Brazilian. It would be an honor to be on the show, no matter on which team, to help the sport and the athletes that are going to be there."
Silva's apparent willingness to let bygones be bygones for the sake of giving back and helping up-and-coming fighters is at least one thing he shares in common with his former bitter rival.
"[It] would be for the young men who are kicking and clawing and trying to get into the UFC," said Sonnen back in October. "I think his knowledge of the sport is tremendous, but also his ability to communicate in a Portuguese atmosphere would be very helpful."
Although it appears the stars weren't aligned for a Sonnen/Silva reunion this winter on TUF, perhaps somewhere down the line the two mixed martial arts (MMA) superstars can still get together, throw a barbecue and swap old war stories over a pair of medium rare steaks?
Anything is (still) possible.
